Welcome to our practice

You have a choice in your healthcare.

We want you to be as relaxed and informed as possible. Our practice is working together to realize a shared vision of uncompromising excellence in health care.

Our practice is associated with both Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital.

Listening to our patients

We want to hear your story. Everyone is different, with unique experiences and health goals. When we understand the full picture, we can provide you with the best care.

Explaining all the options

We explain in terms you understand, lay out the options from the most conservative to the most aggressive treatment approach, and discuss the pros and cons.

Earning the trust and respect

Of our patients, the profession, and our community. We take the time to provide excellent care and build respectful relationships.

Exceeding expectations

We aim to provide exceptional care because we are honored to be chosen as a part of your healthcare team.

Continuous improvement

We enjoy expanding our knowledge and keeping up to date with the best evidence, and we strive to improve our patients' experience.

Services

Gynecology, in-office procedures and surgery.

Too often patients struggle with heavy and irregular bleeding and assume they have to endure it. There is no reason to have this impact your life. Let us help you reclaim your life. You also don't need to live with urinary incontinence.

Gynecology

Annual exams are key to good health as you age. The sooner an abnormality is found, the better the chances of managing or recovering from it. ACOG recommends first visits as early as age 13, with pelvic exams and Pap tests generally beginning around age 21.

We offer the following medical services

  • Initial pregnancy confirmation
  • Management of heavy and irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Colposcopy (often follow-up to abnormal Pap tests)
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Hysteroscopy
  • In-office Endosee
  • Contraception counseling
  • IUD placement and removal
  • Nexplanon placement and removal
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap and HPV testing)
  • STD testing
  • Treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse
  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

Minimally invasive surgery

Laparoscopic surgery that gets you home sooner.

Dr. Heywood is a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the first surgeon to perform Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (TLH) at Falmouth Hospital. We perform most major and minor laparoscopic gynecological surgeries including hysterectomy, cyst removal, endometrial ablation and tubal ligation. The traditional hysterectomy that kept people down for weeks can usually be avoided; a laparoscopic hysterectomy often enables patients to go home the same day. For the right patient, endometrial ablation is a life-changing procedure for heavy bleeding.

Richard E. Heywood, DO

Board certified OB/GYN since 2010FACOG

Education: University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Residency: Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

Dr. Heywood was born in Plymouth and raised in Marstons Mills. He studied engineering at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, took a commission in the Navy Reserve, and worked as an engineer in Boston before discovering he missed the human side of his profession. After pre-med classes at Harvard Extension School he graduated from the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004, completed his OB/GYN residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and served seven years of active duty in the Navy before moving his wife and three children back to Cape Cod.

In 2014 he started Falmouth Women's Health to get back to the basics of providing medical care. A streamlined practice lets him spend significantly more time with each patient, with time to be heard and to tie up all loose ends during the visit. Away from work he enjoys fishing, boating, music and his family and dog Frankie.

New patients

Your first visit builds the foundation.

During the first visit we gather important background like your medical history and give you time to get to know your doctor. Here are the steps to becoming a new patient.

1
Contact your insurance carrier to verify you are eligible for our services. If a referral is required, obtain it from your primary care physician before your appointment.
2
Call our office to become a patient. We'll send a link to our patient portal so you can create a login, agree to our practice and HIPAA policies, and fill out your health history.
3
Once signed in to the portal, request an appointment by calling us or sending a request through the portal.
4
If your medical history needs to be sent, have it faxed to (877) 669-1746.
5
A few days before your visit you'll get an email and text to confirm. Confirm and "check in" to describe your primary complaint — please do this before every appointment.

Bring to your first appointment

  • Your current insurance card(s)
  • A photo ID
  • Copayment

Forms (Authorization for Release of Medical Information, Permission to Share Medical Information, Practice Policies) are completed through the patient portal.

Educate yourself on your symptoms and get to know our doctors on this page — being well prepared helps relieve any unnecessary anxiety.

Insurance & policies

We take most insurance plans.

Please call your insurance company to find out if we are an in-network provider for your specific plan. As a courtesy, we submit your claim to your insurance company. If you do not have insurance, call our office for an estimate on the cost of a visit or procedure.

Your insurance company determines what portion of the claim it will cover, and financial responsibility rests with the patient regardless of coverage. Know your copay and deductible when you make an appointment. Many plans, especially HMO plans, Tricare and MassHealth Standard, require approval from your primary care physician before you see a specialist — request any referral before you schedule and let us know when you book.

Non-urgent communication is best handled through the patient portal; please allow up to 5 business days for a response. Urgent matters should be called in. After hours you can call our office and ring through to the physician on call for complications from surgery. If you can't get through or don't get a call back within 20 minutes, go directly to your local urgent care or hospital.

Copays and outstanding balances are due at the time of service. We accept cash, personal checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. There is a $35 service charge for returned checks. Payment plans are available.

Office appointments must be canceled or rescheduled at least 24 hours in advance. For surgery, you must be outside of one week to avoid a fee. We reserve the right to assess a $50 fee for any missed in-office or virtual appointment. If something extenuating comes up, please let us know.
